Clifford Rainey

Clifford Rainey is a British artist whose work has been exhibited internationally for 35 years. Principally a sculptor who employs cast glass and drawing as primary methodologies, his work is interdisciplinary, incorporating a wide spectrum of materials and processes.

Rainey’s work has been exhibited widely: Kunstmuseum, Dusseldorf; Millennium Museum, Beijing; Art Gallery of Western Australia; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; and Museo de Arts Contemporaneo, Monterrey, Mexico.

His work is in the permanent collections of the De Young Museum, San Francisco; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Art and Design, New York; Fine Arts Museum of Boston; the Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Rainey has realized a number of large-scale public art commissions, including The Liverpool Railway Station, England; The Jeddah Monument, Saudi Arabia; and The 911 Communication Center, San Francisco.

Rainey’s work has been reviewed in numerous periodicals: Sculpture magazine, Art Review, CIRCA magazine, Urban Glass Art Quarterly, Neues Glass, the Sunday Times London, and the Los Angeles Times.

Rainey also was the subject of a Spectrum documentary directed by Bob Brein: “Clifford Rainey” (Ulster TV, 1985).

He is a recipient of the 2000 Virginia A. Groot Foundation Award and the 2009 Urban Glass Outstanding Achievement Award, New York.
