On Wednesday, May 3, 2023, Linda Nguyen Lopez opened her studio to the public for a viewing of her newest and latest projects. The free event was part of the inaugural Virginia A. Groot Material Exploration Residency. Based in Asheville, North Carolina, the program at the Center for Craft is a six-week residency that allows the sculptor-in-residence to develop their work, experiment with materials, and share their learning experiences with others.
Lopez kicked off the event with an insightful artist talk, followed by a visit to her studio space for attendees to view her current ceramic pieces created during her residency. In 2021, Lopez was recognized as a Groot Grant Honorable Mention, a testament to her exceptional creations that delved into the theme of the “persistent presence of the absent.” Her latest work, however, unearths and intertwines the obscured cultural pasts of her mother, a Vietnamese refugee, and her father, a Mexican immigrant.
Congratulations to Linda on her continual artistic achievements!
